Is Hormone Replacement Therapy Suitable for You?
Most women can start hormone replacement therapy, known as HRT, when they begin having menopause symptoms.
Menopause symptoms can begin as early as the forties, although some women don’t experience them until their sixties. The average age for experiencing menopause symptoms is around 52.
Usually it’s not necessary to take tests to confirm that you are experiencing the menopause before you begin hormone replacement therapy. However this may be necessary if you are in your early forties or if you are experiencing unusual monthly bleeding patterns. Tests can rule out other conditions such as cervical cancer or hyperthyroidism before you begin hormone replacement therapy.
When Hormone Replacement Therapy May Not be Suitable
Hormone Replacement Therapy may be too risky for you if you have one of the following:
- A history of blood clots
- A history of breast, endometrial or ovarian cancer
- A history of cardiovascular disease
- A history of liver disease
You will also be unable to begin hormone replacement therapy if you have high blood pressure. Once your blood pressure is brought under control you should be suitable for treatment.
If you aren’t suitable for hormone replacement therapy there are plenty of alternative treatments for menopause symptoms including herbal remedies. Check some of them out here.
